1.1: What is a filter cartridge?

A filter cartridge is a replaceable filtration element used in industrial dust collectors to separate airborne particulate from the airstream. 1.2: Is a filter cartridge better than a filter bag?

Filter cartridges and filter bags each have suitable applications. Pleated filter cartridges can provide a larger filtration area within a compact volume, while filter bags may be more suitable for other temperatures, dust characteristics or operating conditions. Selection should be based on the actual application.

1.3: How are filter cartridges cleaned?

Industrial dust collector filter cartridges are commonly cleaned by pulse-jet compressed air. Compressed air pressure is typically above 4 bar. A short pulse creates reverse airflow through the cartridge, causing the pleated filter media to flex and helping accumulated dust detach from the surface.

1.4: What filter cartridge sizes are available?

2.1: What filter media are available?

Common filter cartridge media include cellulose-based filter paper, polyester (PET), glass-fiber-based media, PPS, P84, NOMEX, PI and other specialty filter materials. The appropriate material is selected according to operating temperature, dust characteristics, chemical conditions, moisture and filtration requirements.

2.2: What is a cellulose filter cartridge?

Cellulose-based filter paper is commonly used for suitable low-concentration dry-dust applications. Pleated cellulose media can provide a relatively large filtration area within a compact cartridge. For example, a Ø350 × 660 mm cellulose filter cartridge typically has a filtration area of approximately 20-23.4 m², depending on pleat design.

2.3: What filtration grades and functional options are available for cellulose media?

Standard cellulose-based filter media are commonly available in filtration grades around F5-F7. With nano coating or other composite surface treatment, higher filtration grades such as F9-H10 can be supplied according to the selected media specification.

Additional options can include flame-retardant treatment, antistatic treatment and other functional surface treatments according to application requirements.

2.4: What is a polyester (PET) filter cartridge?

Polyester (PET) pleated nonwoven media are widely used for industrial dust collection and are suitable for relatively high dust concentrations. A Ø350 × 660 mm PET filter cartridge typically has a filtration area of approximately 9-10 m², depending on pleat geometry.

2.5: What filtration grades and functional options are available for PET media?

PET filter media are available in different filtration grades. Depending on the media construction and surface treatment, grades can range from approximately F5-F9 to higher-efficiency options such as H10, H11 and H12.

2.6: What high-temperature filter media are available?

High-temperature filter cartridge media can include PPS, P84, NOMEX, PI and other specialty filter materials. These materials have different temperature resistance, chemical resistance and moisture-resistance characteristics and should be selected according to the actual process conditions.

High-temperature nonwoven filter media commonly use heavier media weights than standard cellulose or PET media. Typical values vary by material and product specification.

Filtration Grade and Performance
3.1: How is the filtration grade of a filter cartridge determined?

The filtration grade depends on the base filter media, fiber structure, media weight, surface treatment, membrane technology and overall filter construction. Filter cartridges with the same external dimensions and even the same base material can therefore have different filtration performance.

For example, cellulose media may be supplied in grades such as F5-F7, while nano-coated or composite cellulose media can reach F9-H10. PET media can be supplied in grades ranging from approximately F5-F9, with higher-efficiency configurations including H10, H11 and H12 depending on the selected media and treatment.

The final filtration grade should be confirmed according to the actual filter media specification selected for the cartridge.

3.2: What is the difference between nano coating, impregnation and membrane lamination?

Nano coating is commonly used with cellulose-based filter media to improve fine-particle filtration performance. Impregnation treatments can be applied to selected media to improve stiffness, forming performance or other physical properties.

PTFE and ePTFE membrane lamination are commonly used with suitable filter media to provide a fine surface filtration layer. Different treatments result in different filtration grades, pressure drops and dust-release characteristics.

3.3: Does a larger filtration area always mean higher filtration efficiency?

No. Filtration area and filtration efficiency are different parameters. A larger filtration area can reduce filtration velocity, but filtration efficiency is mainly determined by the filter media and filtration grade.

Excessively tight pleat spacing can also make dust release more difficult during pulse cleaning. Filtration area, pleat spacing, filtration grade and cleaning performance therefore need to be considered together.

3.4: What filtration velocity should be used?

Filtration velocity depends on the filter media, filtration grade, dust concentration, particle characteristics and cleaning conditions. For suitable applications, cellulose filter cartridges are commonly designed at approximately 0.5-0.7 m/min, while polyester (PET) filter cartridges are commonly designed at filtration velocities up to approximately 1.2 m/min.

The final filtration velocity should be selected according to the actual dust and operating conditions rather than cartridge dimensions alone.
